WHO - OK Senator Connie Johnson
Connie Johnson, a Choctaw descendant, was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma, and has devoted more than four decades to public service and community advocacy. A top graduate of Oklahoma City’s historic Frederick A. Douglass High School, she went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in French from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from Langston University.
Her professional career includes 24 years as a policy analyst in the Oklahoma State Senate, where she was later elected to represent Senate District 48—Oklahoma City’s predominantly Black Eastside—and was only the fourth person to ever hold the seat. During her tenure, Senator Johnson authored, advanced and enacted legislation on healthcare, criminal justice reform, cannabis policy, women’s rights, education, and minority access to contracts, while also championing issues impacting veterans and the environment.
A trailblazer in Oklahoma politics, Johnson is the first woman and the first African/Native American to secure a major party nomination for the U.S. Senate in Oklahoma. She has twice campaigned for governor. As former Vice Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party, she has been a leading voice in statewide initiatives, including chairing the campaign against SQ 776, which sought to enshrine the death penalty in the state constitution, and spearheading the early legislative and advocacy efforts that led to medical cannabis legalization by a vote of the people.
Today, she continues her work in civic engagement and public service as Chair of the Political Action Committee and the State Convention Planning Committee of the Oklahoma NAACP State Conference of Branches, where her actions have focused on generational wealth and civic participation. Locally, she is past chair of the Forest Park Board of Adjustments and remains a trusted resource for voter education and engagement strategies.
Johnson resides in Forest Park, Oklahoma. She is a proud mother, grandmother (“Mi Mi”), and devoted companion to her rescue Shih Tzu, Lacey.
